The Massachusetts recreational scup fishery will be closed after September 30, 2006. What this means for Derby contestants is that they may not use scup for bait after that date. Even scup caught prior to the closure are prohibited, as this is a possession rule. Simply put, no Derby fishermen may use scup for bait after September 30. This is a Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries regulation. Derby participants are obviously subject to these regulations. Those who possess a commercial scup license are also prohibited from using scup while fishing the Derby.
