While the Awards Ceremony is weeks away, already four anglers have won significant prizes for their catches. The Saturday Special Prize Events (featuring a different species on each of the first 4 Saturdays of the Derby) have welcomed some added competition and suspense to the Derby.
On September 16, Zachary Coutinho (12.95 pounds) and Hayden Boullie (8.09) were the recipients of $500 checks for weighing in the heaviest boat and shore bluefish, respectively, that day.
On September 23, David Kadison (boat, 9.61) and Jim Creedon (shore, 9.63) were the big winners, landing the heaviest false albacore. This Saturday, September 30 it's striped bass.
The bonito have their day on October 7.
If you have not yet registered for the Derby, be sure to enter the Special Prize Events at that time.
Best of luck to all.
Lastly, a reminder to all participants: please ice your fish if you plan on donating it to the fillet program. And do NOT use ice from the MV Arena. Thank you."
The Massachusetts recreational scup fishery will be closed after September 30, 2006. What this means for Derby contestants is that they may not use scup for bait after that date. Even scup caught prior to the closure are prohibited, as this is a possession rule. Simply put, no Derby fishermen may use scup for bait after September 30. This is a Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries regulation. Derby participants are obviously subject to these regulations. Those who possess a commercial scup license are also prohibited from using scup while fishing the Derby.

The 61st Derby is underway. While the strong Northeast winds have made conditions less than perfect in the early-going, there have already been some impressive fish weighed in.
The Derby Committee and Weigh Station staff have worked hard to make sure Derby Headquarters was ready for the opening bell on Sunday morning. Drop by some morning or evening to check the ever-changing leaderboard and pick up a 2006 Derby t-shirt. The Weigh Station is open from 8-10 am and pm, daily.
Remember that Kids Day is this weekend - Sunday, September 17. The fun starts at 6 am at the Oak Bluffs ferry wharf.
Best of luck to all Derby participants. Be safe and enjoy the spirit of this special Vineyard event.
